Summary

The Community Guide is responsible for providing individualized training in Discovery, Travel Training, Program Development, and Skill Development for people with Developmental Disabilities. This position supports trains and links individuals to their community and is focused on developing competency based services. This position requires knowledge of travel training methods and practices, instructional planning methods, program coordination methods, customer service principles and applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, rules and regulations.

  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Discovery- Leads a team of professionals in the discovery process.

  • Provides leadership with Discovery teams to complete Discovery Profiles.

  • Coordinate Discovery team meetings and works with each Discovery member to accomplish their goal in Discovery.

  • Completes Discovery profiles.

  • Does follow-ups with team members to ensure that the Discovery Process is progressing.

  • Explores with the individual their interest through involvement in a wide range of community experiences that will increase the depth of information for Discovery Profiles.

 

Travel Training- Trains individuals on how to ride the COTA independently including pedestrian and community safety training.

  • Develops customize travel training plans using systemic training.

  • Performs functional evaluations to assess the individual's ability to be successful at travel training.

  • Works outside in all types of weather which includes working in cold, rain, snow and/or heat.

  • Prepares correspondence and/or follow-up materials for potential trainees and current users of transit services. Designs individual travel plans based on functional mobility and cognitive needs.

  • Presents to the community how travel training services are provided.

  • Teaches safety skills training in the community.

 

Program DevelopmentDevelop competence based services that lead to increased valued roles in the community.  Networking with the community to develop very detailed outcome based program plans for all ARC Staff providing community based services. The Community Guide will work closely with each ARC Staff member in developing the plan. The outcomes for this service will provide an infrastructure that will result in services demonstrating consistency, accountability, quality and variety.

  • Provides a variety of well planned activities with a purpose to meet the needs of individuals and helps to identify and address barriers to these activities.

  • Develops, writes and/or implements programs that reflect community based outcomes for growth and development and advocates for the individual.  Monitors the success of the programs implemented and revises the programs when needed.

  • Documents the success of the programs implemented and provides feedback when needed.

  • Develops relationships with natural community supports and helps individuals and staff utilize community resources. 

  • Provides enjoyable safe environments that increase the likelihood that relationships will occur. 

  • Develops and evaluates classes and program plans to ensure programs are implemented effectively.

  • Trains Franklin County staff on leading groups and teaching methods that result in skill development.

  • Performs compliance reviews and other program documentation as needed

  • Monitors the quality of programs and conducts quality reviews for accountability.

  • Serves as a role model and assists participants in making informed life choices.

  • Negotiates rates for activity costs.

Skill Development -this service provides support and training for individuals that lack the necessary skills to be successful in larger groupings of people. Staff will support the individual in the development of competencies like social skills so that the person can be successful in larger groupings of people.

  • Provides tailored supports for individuals that have complex needs that are obstacles to success in normal service groupings in the community.

  • Provides opportunities in the following areas: volunteering, educational opportunities, travel training, career explorations and recreational pursuits.

  • Focuses on full community inclusion for each person served developing effective teaching methods to maximize that maximizes independence and fostering relationships in the community.

  • Assists in forming and sustaining relationships with natural supports that provide the individual opportunities in community membership.

  • Instructs and counsels the individual in problem solving and decision making.

  • Work efficiently with various electronic equipment including PC, Mac, tablets, and smart phones.

  • Observes individual's behavior through daily interaction and reports any unusual changes to appropriate party.

  • Acts as a role model and assists individuals in learning appropriate social skills.

  • Ensures program adherence to all policies and procedures and laws governing the developmental disabilities field.

  • Advocates and collaborates with other individuals and organizations on behalf of the person being served.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work or other related human services field required (Master's degree preferred).
  • Two (2) years' experience working with persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and providing community-based supports that focus on community inclusion.
  • Experience and ability to develop and implement teaching methods that adapt to various learning styles.
  • Previous experience and working knowledge of Social Role Valorization preferred.
  • Previous experience in the development of behavioral and social skills strategies preferred.
  • Experience using and/or teaching people how to use public transportation (i.e. COTA).
  • Valid Ohio driver's license with 5 or fewer points and the ability to meet requirements for background checks, drug screen and van driver training.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid and the customized needs of the Person served as described in the Individual Service Plan (training provided).
